A Time To Kill

A Time To Kill

Hey and welcome back to 'diaryofanoverthinker' as promised I'm steering clear of the Menendez brothers even though the rumours of them being released today/tomorrow is all over my FYP. Anyways today I'll be writing about an old book which is also an amazing movie I have recently discovered. So sit back, relax and enjoy!

A little about 'A Time To Kill'

A Time to Kill is a novel by John Grisham, published in 1989, and adapted into a film in 1996. The story centers on Carl Lee Hailey, a black father who takes the law into his own hands by killing the white men who brutally raped his young daughter. With the help of his attorney, Jake Brigance, Carl Lee fights for his freedom in a racially charged trial. The book/movie shows themes of racism in the 1980s and the challenges faced by a street lawyers. As Jake strives to make a name for himself while taking on such an intense case he takes the risk of this case making or breaking his career

How I came to know of it

So, I recently returned from Turkey, and during my flight back, I was searching for a movie to watch. I came across A Time to Kill, and it immediately caught my attention. My dad mentioned that I would enjoy it, so I decided to give it a shot. Now I’m not exaggerating when I say I loved every second of it. While we all know Se7en is my all-time favorite movie and nothing has ever come close, this one came in a very close second. The themes reminded me a lot of To Kill a Mockingbird, which I've been reading so I guess that's why I enjoyed to even more.

I then found out it was a book and since I enjoyed it so much I decided to borrow the book and read it. Now I didn't finish the whole book because its thick and old which makes it that much harder to read and understand but I actually read majority of it and I'm proud of that.

Why I liked it

I loved A Time to Kill because it captured that serious case vibe I really enjoy, while also having moments of lightheartedness. The way it was portrayed was excellent, with everything balanced perfectly. Overall, it’s an amazing movie that reaches you on a deeper level, making you think and question racism and the complexities of the legal system.I mean to be honest it's kind of one of those cinematic masterpieces you come across and can never get over.

My favourite part of the movie

One of my absolute favorite parts of the movie is Jake's closing speech to the jury. The ending of that speech was such a powerful twist and likely a key reason they won the case. It was incredibly deep and moving, and watching it late at night while feeling exhausted made it hit even harder. That moment really made me fall even more in love with the cinematic masterpiece. Especially the very last sentence, I mean that made me rethink everything I knew.

Overall review

Overall I love this movie and the book and I'd recommend it to anyone who has similar movie taste to me. I mean I genuinely think that older movies of this theme and vibe are way better than the ones made now.I genuinely think it ties up to Se7en and if you know me that says a lot .
