BOT vs OTH

Hey and welcome to 'diaryofanoverthinker' today I will be talking about two of my favourite things and probably the reason I'm so obsessed with the earl 2000s(minus the amazing vibe, duh) so sit back ,relax and enjoy!

One Tree Hill(OTH)

For those of you who are lame (jk jk) and don’t know—One Tree Hill is only the best early 2000s teen drama ever, and I’m basically in love with it. It’s lowkey my comfort show.

Set in the small town of Tree Hill, the show initially follows the lives of two half-brothers who compete for spots on their high school basketball team, which sparks all kinds of drama between them. But of course, it’s so much more than that—because what teen drama isn’t?

I seriously love all the characters and the overall vibe of the show. Even when it followed their adult lives later on, I never lost interest. I was obsessed through all 9 seasons… and honestly? I still haven’t had enough.

Boys of Tommen(BOT)

If you’ve been following my blogs for a while, you already know this is my all-time favorite book series. Like, no book can ever compare—and ironically, it’s set in the early 2000s, specifically 2005 (the same year One Tree Hill started!).

Set in Ireland, the Boys of Tommen series introduces readers to the lives of Johnny Kavanagh, the Lynch siblings, Gibsie, Claire, Lizzie, and their friends as they navigate life at Tommen College and the transition into adulthood. Like any great teen/high school story, it explores humor, heartache, sports(specificaly rugby), and romance—making it, in my opinion, the best book series ever.

What makes it even more special is how each book shifts focus to different characters and their POVs, letting you dive deeper into their world with every installment.

This series—and its unforgettable characters—will forever hold a special place in my heart. All 3,824 pages (approximately) and counting

Both

As I keep thinking about One Tree Hill and Boys of Tommen, I can’t unsee the similarities between the two. Honestly, it's kind of funny. Like, Nathan and Johnny? Same energy. And don’t even get me started on Gibsie and Tim—especially in the earlier seasons.

Here are just a few of the parallels I’ve noticed:

High School Sports (But They're Trying to Go Pro)

Both Nathan and Johnny take their sports seriously—not just as hobbies, but as career paths.

  • Nathan is focused on basketball and is constantly under pressure from his father to succeed.
  • Johnny, on the other hand, is deeply committed to rugby, and his path is challenged by a major injury.
They both have real talent, real drive, and real struggles that come with chasing something bigger than high school.

Found Family > Actual Family

Let’s be real: in both stories, most of the parents are… not great.

  • In OTH, Nathan’s relationship with Dan is toxic, Lucas grows up without his father, and Peyton and Brooke's parents were never there.
  • In BOT, Johnny and the Lynch siblings face serious trauma and abandonment—and the emotional consequences feel even more intense.
But out of all that pain, both groups form these unbeatable found families. They lift each other up, protect each other, and form the kind of support system that their actual families couldn’t provide.

🎧 Early 2000s Vibes (Duh)

Both stories are soaked in that perfect early 2000s feeling.

  • The music, the fashion, the lack of smartphones—it's all vibes.
  • The friend dynamics feel raw, real, and nostalgic. There’s a sweetness to how they just exist together—hanging out, making mistakes, growing up—and even though not everything is happy, there's a constant feeling of connection and possibility.

Honestly, Boys of Tommen feels like the Irish book-version cousin of One Tree Hill—both emotional rollercoasters with unforgettable characters, big dreams, deeper trauma, and just the right amount of chaos and comfort.

Yeah so basically this was just an excuse to yap out two of my favourite things. I really hope you enjoyed todays blog.

until next time
