Job Shadowing

Job Shadowing

Hey and welcome to 'DiaryofAnOverthinker' ,today I’m sharing my experience from the two days I spent job shadowing at Ezintsha—an opportunity made possible by my school and one of my friend’s dads, who kindly offered to let us shadow him.

Before diving into everything I did and learned, I just want to say how incredibly grateful I am for this experience. It was eye-opening, super informative, and honestly so exciting. I’m really glad I had the chance to be part of it.

Day 1-09/07

Once we had all arrived at Ezintsha, we got into a car and headed to the Analytical Lab Africa event at the Gallagher Convention Centre, where the person we were shadowing was scheduled to speak on a panel.

When we arrived, we were free to either walk around or sit in on the panel discussion. Even though I didn’t fully understand everything being discussed, it was still really exciting and such a cool experience .

After the panel, we returned to his office, where he spoke to us about his career and answered all our questions. He shared his journey—from university all the way to his current position—which gave me a lot of perspective and insight into the path he took.

He then gave us a tour of the office, explaining where different things happen and going into detail about some of the processes.

After that, we read Salaah and had lunch together while continuing to chat and ask questions. That marked the end of my first day—and it was a really interesting and inspiring one.

Day 2-10/07

Day 2 was a lot more relaxed. There were only three of us instead of six, and we started the day by getting into a car and driving around to various locations where they usually find participants for their clinical trials and testing.

The drive was long and a bit tiring, but it was also incredibly eye-opening. We got to see a completely different side of the city—one I don’t usually experience—and it really gave me a deeper understanding of the kind of work that goes into medical research.Which also made me want to go into this field even more.

After that, we went on a tour of the labs where clinical trials and other types of testing take place. This part was especially exciting for me because it’s exactly the kind of environment I hope to work in someday. Seeing the labs up close and learning about how everything operates made me feel inspired and genuinely excited about the future.

Overall

Overall, this experience helped me so much. Lately, I had been feeling unsure about whether to pursue biochemistry or biomedical sciences (I’m still deciding, but I’m leaning toward biomedical sciences). But after these two days, all my doubts disappeared.

It was incredibly helpful and gave me a real sense of what a future in this field could look like. It gave me so much clarity and confirmed that I’m heading in the right direction. I also realized just how valuable opportunities like this are—you really can’t know what something is like until you experience it, even just a little.

I’m so glad I went and got the chance to ask all my questions. Another thing that really helped was having an actual university student there. Listening to the kinds of conversations he was having and the questions he was asking gave me a small glimpse into what university might be like and how the learning environment works.

It’s definitely a challenging career path—but it’s also exciting and rewarding. And now, more than ever, I’m looking forward to it.

Well that's my experience at job shadowing, I hope you enjoyed todays blog and I hope everyones holiday was amazing and that the new Term will be good for everyone.

Until net time
