Nerd Out Trend Pt 2

Nerd Out Trend Pt 2

Heyyy and welcome to 'diaryofanoverthinker' today I will be doing the part 2 of the nerd out trend because if I did it all last week it would be wayyy to long. So sit back, relax and enjoy!

Movies/T.V Shows

So I know I already covered this but the excitement got to me last week and I forgot 2 movies that 100% fit the whole 'nerd out' theme so I'm going to list those and then get into the other categories.

Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children

I HAVE NO IDEA HOW I FORGOT THISS. This movie was my childhood, and honestly, I’m still obsessed with it. I even read the first two books and everything. It was one of those random movies my dad found on DStv one Sunday morning, and after that, I was hooked. I could only watch it once in a while when I happened to find it again, but a few years later, I saw it on Disney+ and that completely reawakened the obsession.

The books were so good, and I’m still mad they messed up Emma’s character in the movie—but hey, it is what it is. I never got past the second book, but I might try again this year because honestly, this movie was everything. And let’s be real a bunch of peculiar kids living in a time loop? That’s about as nerdy and cool as it gets.

Wonder

So I never read the book—mainly because I only found out recently that it was a book in the first place—but I absolutely LOVED the movie as a kid. And honestly, I still get excited whenever someone mentions it (even though that happens way too rarely).

It was one of those random movies we stumbled across on a Sunday morning, and I was instantly hooked. Like, let’s be real—Auggie was totally a nerd with the whole space obsession, but he was such a cool nerd, and I loved that about him.

Books

Ok so I know a lot of the movies I did were books first but it was easier to put them under movies because for books I have very specific ones I want to put.

The Secret History

Okay, first of all—I just need to say this book was AMAZING. I need a sequel or something because I seriously loved it. Sure, it was a bit slow at times, but honestly, those slower parts added so much depth. Without them, it wouldn’t have hit nearly as hard.

If I ever find someone who’s read this book, I will not stop talking about it. Like, I have so many feelings about this damn book, and the second I find someone to nerd out with, it’s over—we’re having a full-blown discussion.

And let’s be real: this is peak nerd book. A bunch of kids studying Greek in this exclusive, almost secretive class? All of them slightly (or very) messed up in their own ways, using what they learn to justify even worse decisions? Yeah, that’s some elite-level storytelling.

Also—Henry? As unhinged as he turned out to be, he was the ultimate nerd. Like, how was he that smart and knowledgeable? It was terrifying and impressive at the same time.

If We Were Villains

Okay—another AMAZING book. Like, this one actually had me staring at the wall afterward. Maybe not quite on The Secret History level (because let’s be honest, nothing compares to those twists), but still—so good.

Yes, it was slow at times, but every bit of that just added to the depth. It gave the story room to breathe and the characters space to unravel, which made the emotional payoff so much stronger.

And let’s talk about the vibe—this is next-level nerd territory. A bunch of misfit kids studying Shakespearean theatre, forming this intense little found family… and then slowly spiraling, turning on each other, losing their grip on reality? Yes, please. I need more books like this.

The Black Cat

I don’t think anyone truly understands how much I love this book—or how deep my obsession with Edgar Allan Poe goes. I already loved his work, but this short story sealed the deal. We have a connection, and I’m not even being dramatic.

It’s such a brilliantly written story—dark, captivating, and unforgettable. Honestly, I think it’s the kind of short story everyone should read at least once in their lives. It’s that good.

True Crime

So, as most of you probably know (if you follow my blog), I have a habit of stumbling across random true crime stories and then getting completely fixated on them for months.

Right now, I’m deep into the whole situation with the missing kids in Virginia and that weird ice cream truck showing up late at night (yeah... that one). But for now, I’m just gonna yap about some true crime cases I could seriously go on about for daysss.

The Menendez Brothers

So again, if you’ve been following my blog, you already know how deeply immersed I was—and still am—in this case. I’m a little less obsessed now than when I first discovered it (when there was so much to dig into), but it still sticks with me.

Honestly, this has to be one of the most intricate true crime cases I’ve ever gotten into. And since it was one of the firstfew I really dove into, it hit even harder. The fact that it was such an old case being reopened by people our age? That alone gave it a whole different kind of weight. And between the documentary and the Monsters series, it completely took over my brain for months.

Even now, I have so much to say about it—because it felt like the world just treated it like another "iconic 2024 trend," and then moved on. But it shouldn’t be like that. There are millions of cases just like this one happening all over the world, and most of them never get the attention they deserve.

The Zodiac Killer

This is yet another massive case that was never fully solved, and honestly, it still haunts me. Between the books, movies, and documentaries, it’s one of those stories I keep coming back to. I’ll always have my own theories and opinions on it—there’s just so much to unpack.

It’s kind of sad to think that so many of the people involved are now gone, which means we’ll probably never get the full truth. But it’s also one of those cases I don’t think society will ever truly move on from—it’s too iconic, too mysterious.

And I can’t lie… whoever the Zodiac was, he was terrifyingly intelligent. It both impresses and creeps me out. It’s the kind of case that makes me want to go full-on Pip mode and try to solve it myself (even though, let’s be real, that’s probably never happening).

The College Idaho Murders

I only found out about this case recently when the documentary dropped, but wow—this one is wild. I honestly don’t even know how to describe the killer. He was somehow both incredibly dumb and a total mastermind at the same time. Like, he made all the rookie mistakes you'd expect from an amateur, but still had that eerie, calculated energy you’d see in a murder mystery villain. It’s such a strange mix.

What really gets me, though, is how tragic and terrifying it all is. These were just kids—living their best lives—until suddenly, they weren’t. Everything changed in an instant, and that kind of horror really sticks with you.

Okay, I know it’s probably starting to feel like I’m dragging this out—but honestly, I’m enjoying this idea way more than I expected. So yes... a Part 3 is definitely coming. I just don’t want this blog post to get ridiculously long.

I hope you enjoyed today’s post and maybe found something relatable in here. Thanks for reading.

Until next time
