The Book Ban

Hey and welcome to 'diaryofanoverthinker' today I will be talking about something that effects all book lovers, especially the ones in the US.So sit back, relax and enjoy me yapping about my feeling toward this book ban(even though I don't live in the US).
What is the book ban?
The book ban refers to a list of over 1,000 books being restricted by the U.S. government , taking these books out of libraries, schools, and bookstores. These books are being removed due to themes or content that the government or certain groups object to.
Some books being banned
- To kill a mocking bird
- The perks of being a wallflower
- The diary of Ann Frank
- 1984
- Harry Potter
- The hunger games
- Lord of the flies
- The outsiders
- The fault in our stars
- Shatter me
- Heart stopper
- All the bright places
- AGGGTM
- Twilight
- The summer I turned pretty
This and so many more books that include important parts of history, literature and master pieces of some of the greatest poets and writers of all time. I could go on for hours with this list and we would only scrape the surface of whats being banned.
My thoughts on the ban
Honestly, this book ban scares me more than anything else. The fact that these books are being banned feels like a dystopian reality, and what's even more unsettling is that many of the books on the list discuss the banning of religion, books, and other forms of expression. When reading Shatter Me, you never think it could happen to you, but now, it feels like it might be a real possibility.
Books, words, and literature are vital forms of expression. They allow us to share feelings, escape reality, preserve history, and showcase masterpieces—and now they're being erased from society as if they never existed.
Many of the books on the list are incredibly important for society, but ironically, the reasons they're important are the very reasons they're being banned. Let’s take a look at three examples of banned books and why they matter:
A Classic - To Kill a Mockingbird: This book is important because it tackles racism and rape through the lens of someone living in the 1930s. Ironically, the very reasons it’s impactful—its honest portrayal of racism and injustice—are the reasons it’s being banned. The goal was always to educate, but now it’s considered offensive.
A Modern Classic - Harry Potter: This series is a staple of many people's childhoods, offering themes of magic, friendship, and adventure that transport readers to another world. The reason it's being banned? The mention of witchcraft, which means children are now being denied the opportunity to experience magic through reading.
A Newer Book - All the Bright Places: This novel addresses mental health in a subtle yet relatable and profound way. In a time when society is encouraging openness about mental health, banning a book that portrays it so well, especially from a teenager’s perspective, is contradictory.
These are just three examples, but there are countless other books—masterpieces that helped people through tough times—that are being banned. It’s heartbreaking to see such important works being erased from public life.
Honestly I could go on for hours about why this book ban is ridicules but I'll stop here for today. I hope you enjoyed todays blog and as always feel free to contact me at adiaryofanoverthinker@gmail.com.
