The Menendez Brothers
hey and welcome back to 'diaryofanoverthinker' today I shall be discussing something a lot deeper than my average topics and something that has become quite a big deal recently. Now even though this is an old case it has been talked about a lot recently and there's even a documentaries on Netflix all of which piqued my interest. So sit back ,relax and enjoy my thoughts on this age old case as a 14 year old.
How I got to know about it
Honestly the way I found out about this case is really weird but at the same time I guess it's normal when you're a gen-z. As I'm sure we all know everyone on TikTok has been obsessing over that one Lyle Menendez edit and it's been every second or third video. I mean all people talk about lately is that edit,P-diddy,Beyonce and hurricanes ,season 4 of obx along with other irrelevant information.
So when I first heard about the edit I had no clue who it was of and I genuinely thought it was going to be some fictional character or something because that tends to be the case with the past two edits that blew up this year. Now unlike those two edits where A. I knew who they were of and knew why there was a hype around them and B. never watched them until way after the hype just because I was curious, I decided to go find out what the edit was called, search it and watch it for myself.
Now I didn't get the hype, I mean it's a good edit and that song is stuck in my head but I didn't really get why people were sipping over him, like I got the Walker Scobell one and I guess I got the Jacob one but this was confusing especially since it was way bigger than the other 2.
Eventually it started blowing up my feed and I got to know about their case and I more or less started to realise what it was about and why so many people were upset about it. It also piqued my interest because I've been reading "A Time To Kill' and it's somewhat similar in a certain way even though this was real and the book is just our fiction.

My original thoughts on the case
Now obviously when you see stuff like this on TikTok you get false information, biased opinions and half of the story. So the very little information I had was they were abused, they killed their parents, they were living in their house and spending money after, people thought they killed them for the money, there's a Netflix documentary and something about a retrial that was kind of confusing. So obviously I went to watch the documentary because that would have more clear facts and information.
Before I get to my thoughts on the case after the documentary let's talk about my thoughts based on the slightly confusing information on TikTok. So obviously at first you'd think they're innocent and that if their parents were abusing them or raping them that it would be self defence, right? So obviously your mind treats them like the victims and you sympathise and think maybe a life sentence was a bit harsh ,especially when they were so young.
But like I said earlier this was all from half information that could be biased, was from teenagers such as myself or simply fake.
My thoughts now
After watching the documentary on Netflix with the opinions from professionals and people who worked on the case and were on the Jury your opinions do change slightly because these facts and opinions are more backed up then those of people on social media.
Honestly my opinions now are more mixed than anything else because on the one hand while some people say they're lying about the abuse you never truly know and therefore you sorta have to believe it, which automatically makes you feel bad for them. On the other hand none of it was really self defence because it was planned and while their parents would've continued to get away with it, it's not exactly a reason to off them. I get the whole you can't really tell anyone about theses kinds of things especially with the stereotypes around boys and abuse and I also get that they couldn't escape so it seemed like they're only out. There's just a part of me that leans to the whole skeptical part of things of "was that really the only way?" but then again one can never truly understand what it's like it situations like that.
Something that I did find unfair was the second trial when they weren't allowed to mention the abuse or anything making it seem like complete murder because in a situation like that their either guilty or didn't do anything at all which seems unfair in my opinion.
Overall opinion
Overall it's a mix of opinions which is expected when you're a 14 year old girl who's read/watched so much fiction where you tend to sympathise with those in their position. It's also hard to give a fair and valid opinion on matters like this when the case is old and the facts are scattered along with different age groups having such different opinions on it.
So really I don't know but it is interesting and I am glad I've gotten to know about it .
Well that's all for todays blog I hope you enjoyed it and just a small reminder if you don't agree with anything I said it's ok because I'm not saying I'm right or wrong I'm just saying this is what I think so if you disagree please don't attack me. I'll also be doing more blogs similar to this in the next few weeks so be prepared for very intense topics. As always feel free to contact me at adiaryofanoverthinker@gmail.com
