We Were Liars
Hey, and welcome to 'diaryofanoverthinker'.Today, I’ll be talking about one of my biggest betrayals as a reader. The plot was just too good not to discuss which somehow makes me feel even guiltier for watching the show instead of reading the book first.Nonetheless, I need to talk about We Were Liars because it genuinely had me staring at the wall afterward. So sit back, relax, and enjoy!
P.S. Theres definitely going to be spoilers so if you haven't watched or read it you probably shouldn't read this just yet
The start
I’m not going to lie the beginning had me unsure, and I honestly wasn’t enjoying it all that much. Still, I really wanted to know what happened, so I pushed through.
At first, all the characters were kind of annoying and honestly were rage-baiting me. But I stuck it out because I was invested in the story, and once I started, I couldn’t not finish it.Like I mean what could be so bad that they couldn't tell her?
My theories
From the start, I was suspecting the grandfather because he was kind of giving off Tobias Hawthorne vibes but worse. And honestly, it’s always the evil rich grandfather. No offence, but what was his problem?
When they started showing flashes to Summer ’17 and hinted that he had memory issues, I was convinced it was all connected. Plus, she literally had the pearls in her hand, so I was like 100% sure it was the grandfather.
There was also a small part of me that wondered if it could be Gat, because it is based on a book and authors love being cruel pulling a huge betrayal from the person the MC trusts the most. But I gave up on that theory pretty quickly and went all in on blaming the grandfather.
I did briefly suspect Johnny for obvious reasons, but that felt too… obvious. And honestly, I don’t think he’d do something like that again, especially since he seemed genuinely guilty about nearly killing that kid.
What actually happened
Let me just say I did not see that coming. Like, at all.
Her wanting to burn the house was already insane to me, and I was like, what the helly? I didn’t fully understand how that ended with her alone in the water, but I was honestly shocked enough to believe that was it.
But the rest of the Liars being dead and Summer ’17 all being in her head was not what I expected. Not even a little.
Also, what did they think was going to happen? Obviously they were going to get trapped that was so obvious. And why did she have to run back in for the pearls? The whole thing was such a dumb plan. Still, I can’t even lie that plot twist really got me.
And can someone please tell me what happened during the mothers’ Summer ’16? Like, what did they do? I need to know.
The ending also messed with me. They really didn’t need to add that part with ghost Johnny and his mum it just made everything extra eerie, and now I want more.
Honestly, this series was just… a lot. And I’m kind of sad I didn’t read the book first, because it definitely would’ve been such a good read.
So yeah, I honestly don’t even have words for what I just watched… but yeah.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed today’s blog, and I wish everyone the best for 2026. Hopefully this year will be amazing.
Until next time
