The DracoTok Era Was Not a Phase, It Was a Lifestyle

Heyy and welcome to 'diaryofanoverthinker'.

Sooo, I know last time I said I was going to be writing about Off Campus and The Crash, and I promise I'll get there. But last night I rediscovered my BIGGEST phase, and that's Dracotok, Slytherin boys, Wattpad, the invention of Mattheo Riddle, and basically all of that chaos.

So it's only fair that I yap about it first because, guys, the weird kid from 2021–2023 still lives within me. 😭

So sit back, relax, and enjoy this trip down memory lane.

Wattpad

Okay, so first I have to address this app because, honestly, I would not be a reader if it weren't for this little app. I also would not have taken this trip down memory lane without Wattpad.

A little explanation: I recently found this book series called The See Me Series, and it's originally from Wattpad. It is genuinely one of the best pieces of literature I've read in a whileeee. It never ceases to amaze me how a bunch of bored teenagers writing fanfics or random stories have somehow managed to create absolute MASTERPIECES.

Not to mention, there was always some crazy author's note. It would be something like, "Sorry I haven't updated recently, I got hit by a bus," and everyone would just move on like that was completely normal.

I once read a book where the author kept getting grounded, but she would sneak her phone back just to write new chapters before getting caught again. So yeah, they were really out here sacrificing their lives for our entertainment.

Anyways, back to the point. Last night I suddenly went on a mission to find some of my all-time favourite Wattpad books and fanfics because, like, guys, why did I ever stop reading Wattpad?

However, I got distracted by the masterpieces that were Slytherin Boys fanfics and never actually made it to the other books.

And I'm talking OGs. Like, Wattpad fanfics in their PRIME. Of course there was Dear Draco and Dear Draco 2 because those books managed to completely rewire my brain chemistry. They were the type of fanfics I'd reread over and over again, and since it's been a while, I started reading them again this morning. And well... yeah, they're just as good as I remember. But I am absolutely terrified for the ending because that will never not traumatise me.(I'm going to do a blog about it after i reread both of them)

Thennnn, if you were on Wattpad between 2021 and 2023, you probably witnessed one of the most influential events in internet history. (No, I am not being dramatic. It genuinely changed my life.) A random fanfic author accidentally created Mattheo Riddle and permanently altered the brain chemistry of an entire generation of teenage girls.

Like, I will forever be grateful to Possessive by Yasmine Amaro for giving me THE obsession of my life. Guys, no matter how far I go in life, I will always come back to my Mattheo phase in full force. I'm talking edits, Wattpad stories, POVs, fancasts, the works.

(I'm going to talk more about the rise of Mattheo a little later.)

Then there’s another one of my ALL-TIME favourites: He’s a Keeper by 88Abby88.

GUYS, this book is AMAZING. There were like three parts, and it ended on a cliffhanger which was actually insane. But this book was genuinely so good.

It was a little dramatic at times, but honestly that’s part of what made it so addictive. It was one of those stories that became a HUGE obsession of mine.

Like, it was so good that people in the comments were saying they were literally in the middle of chemistry class reading it and almost crying at certain parts… and honestly, I get it. You’ll understand when you read it..

Invention of Mattheo Riddle

So basically, this was my Megan Fox in Transformers, guys. This was culturally significant (ignore the TikTok references).

The invention of Mattheo Riddle is one of those things you just HAD to be there for, and fortunately I was there from the beginning. Since I was like 12, I was discovering him and DracoTok on YouTube Shorts (this was before it got taken over by Gen Alpha and became… whatever it is now 😭).

Can we also acknowledge that we were all on YouTube Shorts when it first started back in 2021?Like I know everyone hating on it now was there in 2021.

Anyways, back to Mattheo.

So I was there when he was still kind of a side character in POVs, and I was like, “who is this fine shyt ” (okay, I definitely didn’t say fine shyt back then because that wasn’t in my vocabulary 😭 so let’s just say I was… intrigued).

So I did some intensive digging. Except this was in the BC era (Before ChatGPT era), so I really had to work for it.

That’s when I found out he was basically part of a fancast situation, and he ended up being the first fancast character I actually learned about properly. And once I found him, that basically led me to Theo (who is technically a canon character) and Enzo, and then the whole Slytherin boys universe just… unfolded from there.

I think one of my favourite things about the invention of Mattheo was the whole “is Voldemort his brother or his father?” situation, because it was genuinely so confusing, but also… the concern was valid 😭 and everything about that part of his character became such a big deal in the fandom.

I also love how the vast majority of the fandom (if not all of it) eventually just agreed that, in this separate fancast Slytherin boys universe, Tom and Voldemort are basically treated as two different people. So Tom can be the brother and be part of the group, while Voldemort is still the evil Death Eater father.

Obviously that isn’t canon, and if you really think about it you’re like… wait, who even came up with this? 😭 And for people discovering it after the fact, it can be really confusing. But honestly, I think it was a pretty good solution for how chaotic the fandom situation was.Not to mention it allowed for so many good plots in fanfics and POVs

Another thing I LOVE is how Mattheo is such a well-thought-out fan-made character. I think it’s insane how much time and creativity went into collectively building him as a fandom.

Like sure, people have different ideas and headcanons that not everyone agrees with, which is expected with something like this, but overall I think he has a pretty clear “main character” vibe: the popular, player-type Slytherin guy who’s mean, gets into fights and detention, but somehow still has amazing grades and is secretly the BIGGEST softie ever.

And I just love that general characterisation.

Of course, there are so many extra details and variations, but to get into all of that we’d probably need a whole separate blog 😭

The final thing that makes me genuinely happy happened way later: Benjamin finding out about Mattheo and then going to watch the entire Harry Potter series just to fully understand the character we had built.

Like we seriously used every scene of him from Deadly Class to help shape and develop the fan interpretation of Mattheo and Benjamin had no idea, which I think is actually insane in the best way 😭

That whole period of him discovering everything and everyone freaking out like “wait, is he reading fanfics??” was honestly so wholesome from my perspective as someone who’s been here from the start.

And I also love how Benjamin just openly hates on Mattheo’s name, it’s one of the funniest things ever.

A bit of Ben hating on Mattheo because why not.

DracoTok/Slytherin Boys

So I’m just going to say it: I do not trust people who hate on the concept of DracoTok or the Slytherin Boys fandom.

Now yes, I fully agree that I also don’t like when people ONLY like that side of Harry Potter, because while Slytherin Boys and DracoTok were amazing, it is not Harry Potter in the sense of the movies, which I will forever love with my whole heart.

Like in my head Harry Potter and The Slytherin Boys are very separate fandoms.

But in general, as a separate thing, I LOVE DracoTok. Like guys, to this day I cannot hear any of those songs without being fully transported back in time.

I was in an airport in January and they were playing Why’d You Only Ever Call Me When You’re High (no idea why, but it happened), and when I tell you I froze, I got completely transported. I was 12/13 again, watching POVs, reading Wattpad, and listening to my DracoTok playlist.

Now I will admit, I was never really a Draco girlie, so I was more on the Slytherin boys react(I really miss those) side, or “RiddleTok” (which wasn’t really as big a thing), but yeah I was a Mattheo girl. So my obsession wasn’t as intense in that specific way. Like I wasn’t buying Draco-scented candles or anything, so I guess I missed out on that aspect.

But I was absolutely obsessed with DracoTok, and it was a real phase in my life. And I was 100000% there for the shifting era and everything, guys.

I may seem normal and basic now, but I was definitely the weird kid.

So yeah, I think that about covers it. I hope you guys enjoyed today’s blog.

If you were part of any of these eras—DracoTok, Slytherin Boys, Wattpad fanfic addiction, or the Mattheo Riddle chaos—you already know exactly what I’m talking about 😭

And if you weren’t… just know you missed a very specific moment in internet history that permanently altered a lot of our brain chemistry.

Anyways, thanks for coming down memory lane with me. I’ll be back to 2026 (Off Campus, The Crash,Every Year After) next week I promise.

Until next time
